Dev Platform

Welcome to the Splunk UserVoice. We look forward to your feedback in helping us to deliver a stellar developer experience!

Note: The Developer Platform UserVoice site is for feedback and suggestions to improve Splunk’s Developer Experience. Posts not specifically related to enhancing the platform will be removed.

I suggest you ...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

  1. Control Version

Splunk has direct integration with some control version software like GIT, or that from GUI has the possibility that has his own a control version.
In enviroments with many developers working at same time will be very usefull!

      • host health - in single visualization

I want to show any server health in one single visualization. e.g. most of of the time health of any application node is defined by CPU,memory, network, process(cpu memory..), transaction health.if we can get a flower/donut type visualization whose center is overall health and leaf are sub health. color of leaf/center part should be configurable based on threshold value of each metrics.

          • More examples for C# SDK, Allow users to post sample code

It seems there is a lot of possibility using the SDKs, but the learning curve is killing me. There is not enough context to the commands to intuitively know what to do. I would love to have examples on how each area of the SDK is used. Maybe on the C# SDK reference we can post code samples. I don't see any examples on how to configure the deployment data inputs or anything else on a server with the SDK.

            • Event Logging from the Browser

There's a great Node.js library for splunk logging (https://github.com/splunk/splunk-javascript-logging) but its not quite built for browsers as its a CJS module. Would be a great option to include this library from a CDN and start logging!

              See discussion @ https://github.com/splunk/splunk-javascript-logging/issues/4
              Thanks.

              • Put an IDE "sublimetext" to the edit of .xml and .html files from dashboard

The idea is that we can modify on the fly the source code. And when we save it, the save buttons of the source Splunk work at the same time.

                  • Example of how to use existing Session key in the Splunk SDK (rather than logging in explicitly)

I'm surprised and even a little confused that there's no example of how to use the Python SDK within a custom python controller in a splunk app.
All of the SDK examples assume you're going to explicitly login and there's no illustration of how to give the relevant classes the session token instead.

This means app developers writing custom python controllers (and imo pretty much everything python in their splunk apps), using the older Entity class to talk to Splunkd, or using the REST API directly.

                      Hi Nick

We do support this in our Python SDK. It is in our reference doc, but adding a sample is a good idea.

If you look here: http://docs.splunk.com/DocumentationStatic/PythonSDK/1.5.0/client.html you can pass the “token” as a parameter to “connect” or to the service constructor. You can see an example there of passing the token directly.

“After creating a Service object, you must call its login() method before you can issue requests to Splunk. Alternately, use the connect() function to create an already authenticated Service object, or provide a session token when creating the Service object explicitly (the same token may be shared by multiple Service objects).”

                      Splunk Logging for Python

There is SDK support for Splunk Logging for Java, .net, and Node.js. Can we also have support for Python logging?

                        • Need to pop a custom GUI based on a graph click.

I would like to be able to click on a graph and get the data for that time period off the graph into a piece of custom GUI code which might interact with another larger system (non-splunk based). This might be to set a system configuration parameter or control a device. I would like to be able to inject a piece of html+javascript and get the graph information and other meta data associated with the graph and be able to render my own GUI and submit to my own backend services based on a user response.

                          • Allow for creating Indexes in a cluster via the SDK

Currently there is no way to create an index in a clustered Splunk through the SDK. We currently get around it by creating a symbolic link from the search app to the master-apps folder on the master. We create an index on the master and then have a custom search command to run a shell script to apply the cluster bundle. Would be great to have this supported in the SDK.

                            • Implement an F5 experience for Visual Studio

When I press F5, VS will build my code, create the SPL file, deploy it to the server, run the app on the server, and attach to the app process. Breakpoints, locals, etc. should "just work".

                              Stretch goal: implement edit-and-continue.

                                • Add SecureString support for NET SDK logins

We’ve been trying to tighten up our password handling, and NET has the SecureString class for handling passwords. Is there any possibility of getting an overload of the Service.Login method for the SDK that takes one of these objects for the password?

Our use-case is that when the Splunk SDK is in use in, for example, an IIS ASP.NET website, we want to keep the plaintext of the Splunk login credentials around for as short a time as possible. Usually one would just load the credentials up, send the appropriate REST call, and zero the memory.

                                  NET unfortunately makes that…

                                  • Generate graphs and fetch by API/SDK

Today you can call a saved search and fetch the results as CSV/XML. It would be great to be able to fetch a PNG/JPG image of a predefined graph. This would be very beneficial for reports, websites etc.
